Permanent Minority
This deserves to be quoted in whole:
“50 years ago you shouted nigger, 30 years ago you talked about States Rights, now you ask to see the president’s birth certificate.”
I’d say it dates back even further—to secession and the Civil War. Back then the reason was Slave Power, for the last half century it was the Southern Strategy, now they’ve been reduced to Glenn Beck throwing a hissy fit and senior citizens screaming to keep government out of their Medicare.
You’d think that after being on the wrong side of history for the last two centuries, these people would get a clue.

After they confirm Sotomayor, I hope they sit her right next to Clarence Thomas. Maybe some of her much-maligned “empathy” will rub off on the hypocrite “strict-constructionist.”
John Hodgman on Obama

“What Would Ronnie Do?” asks the conservative blogs. My favorite response comes from Martin:
Reagan would have nuked them, of course. So would have Jesus. If we are so lucky to have them resurrected at the same time, they’ll do their wonder-twin ring power thing. Reagan would take the shape of a B-1B low altitude tactical bomber and Jesus would form into a payload of nuclear radiated holy water. They would then disburse over Iran, ridding the region of their non-pentacostal elements and creating a new holy land for displaced GM and Chrysler dealership owners (the wingnut Holocaust).
Classic! The only problem is I don’t think Jesus and Reagan would ever engage in a terrorist fist bump.

John Cole points out that there is a segment of the “intelligencia” out there who don’t know that a Ph.D. entitles you to the honorific “doctor.”
“New York Times columnist and Nobel laureate Paul Krugman—who I’ve noticed some econ bloggers refer to as ‘Dr. Krugman’ with no hint of sarcasm—says now’s the time to up our daily allowance of stimulis.”
He got his Ph.D. in 1977, so I don’t understand why people are supposed to be sarcastic if they call him Dr. Krugman. What context am I missing here that would explain this?
Which reminds me, I’m the only member of my family without a Ph.D.
Which reminds me that when I was a kid, answering the phone, I often would be asked, “May I speak to Dr. Chay?”
To which, I’d have to ask with no hint of sarcasm, “Which one?”

Obama’s Notre Dame commencement
I remember watching the second presidential debate in 2004, pissed with John Kerry. “Why?” someone asked.
“Because his answer to the abortion question fits right in line with the image of him as a flip-flop.” I replied. “He doesn’t have to answer the question about spending itself, and sure there are nuances to that issue you can’t address in the debate, but he can answer with strong language the morals that guides his decisions; the commonality we all have to minimize unwanted pregnancies. Some pro-lifer is going to see that answer and their perception of Catholicks and think he’s a hypocrite.”
Four years later, we have Obama:
Affirmative Action my ass
A position has opened up on the Supreme Court and no one has been nominated yet. But that doesn’t stop people from smearing someone and shouting “Affirmative Action™” from the rooftops just in case she might be. I guess if you’re not an old white dude, it must be affirmative action, because everyone knows only old white dudes are qualified.
This reverse discrimination reminds me of something my brother mentioned the other day about the Ivy League and its presidents:
- Harvard: a woman
- Yale
- University of Pennsylvania: a woman
- Princeton: a woman
- Columbia
- Brown: an African American woman
- Dartmouth: a Korean-American
- Cornell
But we all know that the only reason that the leaders of most prestigious academic institutions of this nation are 25% minorities and half women is only because of Affirmative Action™.
It seems to me that the only people out of touch with “regular Americans” are the bigots who still see gender and race as a defining trait. If people are going to attack this person based on her gender and race, they actually make the case on why we need affirmative action—after all isn’t the reason it exists is as a balance to such bigotry?
The Southern Strategy was a loser in the last election and will remain a loser indefinitely. These people need to wake up before they get run over.
