Bag rack

A year and a half later:

Bag rack

Why is it that a notebook computer is designed completely differently from a dSLR camera? To torment me?

Any other photo/computer geeks and nerds out there way too many bags?

And yes, I recently gave away four bags before this photo was taken.

  1. Heh. I have a serious bag problem as well – three Tumi messenger bags, two by Vaja, one each by Crumpler, Hlaska, Ferragamo, Jost and one briefcase each by Tumi and Picard, and a backpack by Timbuk2. A M8 does not take up as much room as a 5DmkII or a DP2… There’s an amusing pool on Flickr just for photos of what random stuff people carry in their bags:

A factoid: apparently women’s purses make up a disproportionate share of the luxury goods industry’s profits…

  2. What’s the problem? I have 1 bag for camera stuff and one bag for laptop. The bag for the laptop can carry a DSLR with 1 lens as well. (Crumpler). I am just looking for one nice photobag like the Domke J2. Lowe Pro should have something for you. Camera and laptop protected in one bag.

  3. @Fazal:Yeah I’ve been a member of that pool for a lot of years. Seeing my bags all hung up reminds me that us photographers are like women when it comes to bags. 🙂

@Arne: Most of us subscribe to the One Bag Rule for daily use. Unfortunately, daily we use a camera (dSLR) and a laptop and the convergence of the two is very uncomfortable and less than ideal (certainly you can admit that).

I’ve tried the Lowe Pro solutions and found them not much different from the Crumpler or ThinkTank solutions. I’m convinced that it’s an issue with geometry. If I want to carry a pro dSLR and a notebook daily, then the bag will have to be bulky and unusable in crowded situations. Even the SLR by itself, needs a suite of bags for different lens/shooting situations.

In the above, both ThinkTank bags and the Kata R103 can carry both. I also gave away my Naneu Pro Tango which can do the same. I see three sorts of bags that can do this.

    1) Briefcase style messenger: (e.g. Naneu Pro Tango, Think Tank Urban Disguise, etc.)
    2) Backpack style: (e.g. Think Tank Shapeshifter, Kata R103, many offerings from LowePro, even a Crumpler offering or two)
    3) Bike messenger style: I think there’s an offering from Crumpler that takes this to the extreme.

If you are willing to compromize on the camera size a bit (and the notebook size), things like Timbuk2’s Blogger bag open up a fourth category between (1) and (2): vertically oriented messenger bags/backpacks.
