Keynote makes a movie

Thursday, June 29th, 2006

I’m finally starting to gear up for my two OSCON talks. This is why I found this article about how Al Gore used Keynote to create his movie interesting.

As many of you know, I love this program. I had Caitlin experiment with using this program to make her website, which is sort of like the [...]

10 ways

Thursday, June 29th, 2006

Chris just sent to the list The interact 10 ways website from Getty Images.. The one he mentioned was sumona’s “information” page which generates an infinite photomosaic.
Getty is using it to promote some new media ideas for their stock photography. (I shudder to think how much some of the infinite photomosaic would cost if you [...]

Copying vs. stealing

Thursday, June 29th, 2006

Another person copies Caitlin.
It hurts me too.
She and I spent days creating a set of core values which drive the copy that she puts on her website. There are many compromises and issues that come with creating your own company, and without a moral compass, it becomes easy to make bad decisions that might not [...]

An instrument to see

Thursday, June 29th, 2006

“You put your camera around your neck along with putting on your shoes, and there it is, an appendage of the body that shares your life with you. The camera is an instrument that teaches people how to see without a camera.”
—Dorothea Lange, from J. Star’s Flickr profile

A decisive victory…

Thursday, June 29th, 2006

Concerning the recent Hamden v. Rumsefeld decision:
“I’ve got to say that this decision is a decisive victory in the war to spark ridiculous right wing commentary.”

Buffett and the estate tax

Monday, June 26th, 2006

There was some discussion via e-mail about Warren Buffett’s recent donation to the William and Melinda Gates foundation. I don’t want to concentrate on that, except to state the inevitability of a man like him donating money on the sure-bet charity created by one of his favorite bridge buddies. Oh yeah, before we go all [...]

Blame the troops

Monday, June 26th, 2006

What could be more stereotypical “Republican” than this? When things start going wrong, don’t blame the strategy, blame the troops.

A look at image stabilization

Sunday, June 25th, 2006

A long time ago, someone asked for a hypothetical D200 wishlist feature, I asked for simply one: in-camera vibration reduction.
Whatever you call it, this one recent gift from the video world has revolutionized photography by reducing the need for monopods and tripods.
A recent article when Gary “saw the light” about image stabilization in consumer cameras [...]

Digital blending multiple exposures

Saturday, June 24th, 2006

I received a request on Flickr a couple days ago:
you mentioned taking 3 exposures in one of your shots (a stream in big basin) and combining them together in photoshop. how do you do that?
I can only assume he meant this one:

Redwoods and West Berry Creek
Big Basin State Park, Santa Cruz Mountains, California
Nikon D70, Nikkor [...]
